We began todays lecture discussing what is a synopsis. In screenwriting, a synopsis is a brief summary of the core concept, major plot point, and main character arcs. A screenwriter primarily writes a synopsis as a selling tool to convince film industry higher ups to read the full screenplay. In our case a synopsis can be a great summary of a show or a movie, providing enough context to understand the meaning behind the title sequences we are about to create.

Example

Deadpool

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces operative who now works as a mercenary. His world comes crashing down when evil scientist Ajax (Ed Skrein) tortures, disfigures and transforms him into Deadpool. The rogue experiment leaves Deadpool with accelerated healing powers and a twisted sense of humour.

Titles that Caught My Attention

I am still on the fence about which movie or series I want to base my project on. Below I will go over titles that caught my attention, as well as provide a short synopsis for each.

Batman Begins (2005)

As a child, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) falls into an abandoned well filled with bats, causing him to develop a phobia, and later witnesses his parents' murder at the hands of mugger Joe Chill. Years later, Chill is granted parole in exchange for agreeing to testify against crime boss Carmine Falcone.

Joker (2019)

Arthur Fleck, a party clown and a failed stand-up comedian, leads an impoverished life with his ailing mother. However, when society shuns him and brands him as a freak, he decides to embrace the life of crime and chaos in Gotham City.

Evangelion (1995)

Evangelion is set 15 years after a worldwide cataclysm in the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo-3. The protagonist is Shinji Ikari, a teenage boy recruited by his father Gendo to the mysterious organization Nerv. Shinji must pilot an Evangelion, a giant biomechanical mecha, and fight beings known as Angels.

Brain storming

I am torn between the 2005 Batman, and the 1995 Evangelion. A part of me is leaning towards Batman for it's symbolisms, I mean Batman is just iconic with its clean and recognisable themes. I believe I could use its popularity to my advantage, and highly lean towards the Bat symbolisms, feature a dark heavy colour palette representing the night crime city aesthetic.

Alternatively, when it comes to Evangelion, I imagine the futuristic mech aesthetic and the religious references. Additionally, the Angels within Evangelion are an extremely fascinating concept, there is a lot potential there. I am leaning towards the darker tones of Evangelion, especially since the original title sequence is quite up beat and tries to almost hide the darker undertone of the series. In my case, I can flip that upside down and go completely hard on the dark undertones. So far I am envisioning, once again, a dark colour palette, symbolisms of circles (that being the "eggs" that angels appear from in the show), hands, and of course the mechs.

Conclusion

In the end I believe I will go with my second idea. As much as I like the potential Batman has for a title sequence, I am excited to see what I can do with Evangelion, especially since Evangelion is a Anime series that has its own conventions when it comes to title sequences. I like the idea of making the "what if Evangelion was made by Netflix" title sequence.

Miro

As advised by James, I have decided to create a Miro board where I have began my brainstorm and research process. I found Miro extremely fun and easy to understand. Below I will link my board for this project! I intend to add more to this board as I continue this project.
