We have started today's lecture with an introduction from Tracy Satchwill, who will be our lecturer and guide for this project.
The Brief: Animating Objects
You will choose an object from the museum and create an animation from the artefact using a variety of digital technologies and considering the structure of the object. The animation will imitate the projection mapping of the chosen object. You will also consider the museum’s audience, the context of the object and retell its story. At the end of the project, you will create a prototype animation that replicates projection mapping.
Initial idea
Animating a portrait, I could create movement and make paintings come to life. I particularly liked "The Bridesmaid". I found her face quite captivating, connoting sadness and uncertainty. I thought I could add droplets of tears to her cheeks to exaggerate emotion.
Second Idea
Photographing a patterned vase and animating it. Potentially, I could imitate movement, similar of the Zoetrope. I would achieve this through creating fake movement with patterns.
Conclusion
In the end, I have decided to collaborate with my classmate Betty on this project. During our discussion of potential ideas, we realized that we could integrate our separate concepts into one cohesive theme. We will focus on portraits, specifically "Girl with a Mirror (Allegory of Profane Love)" by Paulus Moreelse (1571-1638), as it allows us to blend both of our artistic interests.
Preparation for the museum visit
Choose an object – Is it relevant to the project? Does it have a good structure for you to animate it?
Capture good quality image of the object/s with your camera
Research -Where’s it from? What era? What is its function? What is the design/illustration about?
Generate ideas – make notes, sketch, take photos
Collate resources – Are you inspired by other designs in the collection that relate to your chosen object? Maybe from the same era, country or subject?
Research
A Girl with a Mirror (Allegory of Profane Love)
The story behind the painting is fascinating. The work is believed to have been commissioned by a wealthy family from the Netherlands as a gift to their daughter. The painting represents the idea of profane love, which refers to earthly and mundane love, as opposed to divine love. The young woman in the painting represents beauty and youth, while the mirror symbolizes vanity and the transience of life.
There are little-known aspects of this painting that make it even more interesting. For example, it is believed that the model for the young woman in the painting was the artist's own daughter, which adds a personal touch to the work. Furthermore, the painting is said to have been stolen twice during its history, which adds an element of mystery and excitement to its story.
Planning
explore other works of this artist
how can I collaborate with his other works?
This approach would offer a unique perspective on the artist's style, themes, and techniques, providing viewers with a comprehensive overview of Paulus Moreelse's body of work within a single composition.
frame within a frame technique
her position connotes movement, eg. pointing finger
this could add dynamic movement to the piece and further engage the audience
explore feelings of purity, youth, beauty, cheekiness, innocence
